MadelynRil

Madelyn Roldan is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist developing in both painting and fiber arts (Latina American, b. 2003). Her works delve into identity, culture, queerness, ailments, memory and dream sequences. My body of work focuses on a sense of surrealism to abstract. A push and pull relationship between the art movements.

Materials in my process are oil paint, fibers and wood. I use oil paint as a visual interest, fibers for touch, relationships and wood as something tangible. The type forms I apply are amoeba forms that act as beings. The amoebas mirror human behavior such as hugging or dancing, this behavior is reflected in my culture. I chose amoebas specifically to remove the patriarchal standards and give the audience of them being that amoeba. Her inspiration is influenced by these artists; Hilma af Klint, Maruja Mallo, Juliana Horner, Sydnie Jimenez, Kaley Flowers and Rebecca Guay. These artists inspire me with the amount of color they apply in their works. From the detail in Rebecca Guay's works to the futuristic naturalism in Kaley Flowers works.

The current process of my work is still being developed. Although for future projects I plan to create more amoebas with adding both fiber, oil and wood materials altogether.
